About the event:

The PON Games, or PON abbreviated from (Pekan Olahraga Nasional in Indonesian), is a national sports week, held every 4 years in different regions throughout Indonesia. It features athletes from different parts of the country and is organized by the National Sports Committee of Indonesia. Scheduled to take place in 2020, the event had been moved a year later due to the pandemic instead. For the first time ever, this edition was held in the island of Papua in October. The PON XX Papua 2021 Games featured a total of 37 different sports, 56 sport disciplines, and more than 7,000 athletes.

Backbone’s role:

For Backbone it was the third sports week in the area that the team worked on. First being the Asian Games, also known as Asiad, which is a continental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. Second being the Asian Paralympics Games. For the PON Games, Backbone was tasked with a broad number of responsibilities which ranged from production management, consultancy, technical production and design, overlay management, to COVID-19 mitigation. The team arranged logistics and equipment resourcing in the beginning of July with transportation for the end of July. Freight arrangement to the island included at least 100 containers with materials, production equipment, and other decor that were shipped from Java to Jayapura. The project involved a 6-people on site team on the island that stayed there for a total of 3 months.
